Our first project consists of finding sponsors for the children of broken families, orphans and poor children on the border regions of Tibet, Dolpo, Mustang and Solo Khumbu. Nepal is one of the least developed countries in the world, and most Nepalese live below the breadline. As in other under-developed countries, Nepal also suffers from problems of child labour, illiteracy, malnutrition, poverty and other children-related conflicts. Inadequate medical services are the main reason behind the country’s low life expectancy. According to the population census of 2001, the population of Nepal is around 22 million, with a density of 200 people per square kilometre, and the rate of people with basic education hardly amounts to 30% of the adult population. Nepal is an independent country that borders on India to the east, south and west. Its northern frontier roughly follows the crest of the Himalayas, where it forms the border with Tibet. The country has a total area of 147,181 Km2.

The Mountaineers for Himalayas Foundation currently sponsors 17 boys and 11 girls and subsidises their private education in Kathmandu. We have established a cooperation agreement with the Himalayan Children’s Foundation based in Kathmandu, which is a non political, non profit-making, non religious and nongovernmental organisation registered with the Government of His Majesty in Nepal and a member of the social security board. This foundation was created in 1997 by a group of young, energetic Nepali social workers in order to sponsor the most abandoned children to offer them a long-term education, health assistance, to prepare them for being independent and self-sufficient while offering them a secure, family environment at the same time. We share this objective as one of the surest means of achieving lasting development in the country.
